Curb Appeal Checklist Before Selling: 7 Weekend Fixes

Buyers often see the front of your home first, in the listing photos and from the street. These seven small jobs make the outside look cared for. Most fit into a weekend and don't need a contractor.

The checklist

  • Mow and edge the lawn, rake leaves and pull weeds from the beds.
  • Sweep the walkway and driveway, and fix loose pavers or anything someone could trip on.
  • Clean or repaint the front door, and tighten or replace the handle.
  • Make the house number easy to read from the street.
  • Replace burned-out bulbs and clean the porch light fixtures.
  • Wash the front windows and remove torn screens.
  • Add two planters or seasonal flowers by the entry, and trim shrubs away from the windows.

What to skip

  • Big landscaping projects right before listing. Ask your agent first whether they make sense in your market.
  • Repainting the whole house in a bold color. A fresh coat on the door and trim usually goes further.
  • Heavy holiday decorations in the listing photos.

When to do it

Finish the outside a few days before the listing photos, so the photographer captures it. Keep it up during showings: mow weekly, sweep the porch and put the outdoor lights on a timer for the evening.
